Week 2: Presentation of groups and their goals.

SEPT. 5th 2018--Small Scale Bogie System (Day 2)

Task Items:

 Summary:

 Today the class went through their lightening talks describing their focus on the project. The small-scale bogie presentation is linked at the bottom of this post. The following groups presented:
  • Full-scale Bogie/Guideway Interface*
  • Full-scale Controls 
  • Full-scale Drivetrain*
  • Full-scale Solar
  • Full-scale Wayside power
  • Half-scale bogie*
  • High Power-density Motor
  • Small-scale Bogie
  • Small-scale Controls*
  • Small-scale Track*
*Groups to establish communication with for ideas, assistance, and concepts.

After the presentation I met with the small-scale track and small-scale controls teams and discussed different concepts and analyzed last years design. 

Progress:
Focus will be mainly on improving drive system as it was the main issue with last years system.
Sub areas include improving switching mechanism to clear gap when turning and ability to handle grades from the track.

Ideas/concepts:
-Allow non-powered axles to remain fixed allowing wheels to turn independently.
-Create indent within the track to act as a guide way. (What about turns?)
-Allow servo to turn axle as well as switching rod to make smoother turns.

Week 11: Small Scale Bogie

NOV 7th - Small Scale Bogie Improvements Team Within this week I tested the use of flanged conical wheels to assess the feasibility of using them for passive turning on the track. The initial design was referenced to an existing design that had a slight angle to the wheel of about 3 degrees. Two wheels were attached to an axle and by gravity was allowed to roll down a curved track. The wheels unfortunately did not move as desired and rather continued in a straight line. A new set of wheels will be tested with a greater angle. The updated design is shown below which has a 25 degree angle. Updated Conical Wheels

Week 10: Prototyping

Oct. 31 Small-Scale Bogie Team The controls team and I talked about the selected  gimbal motor. Some concerns were raised about it not having a shaft and upon further investigation it was found that half of the motor enclosure would rotate not just the shaft. This will make mounting the motor difficult and we should look for alternatives. The need for a functioning test track and Bogie set up are hitting high demand and will most likely be the small scales topic for discussion among other things. As far as inductive charging the integration will be lead by the controls team with little Bogie involvement as it does not dorectly effect Bogie design.

Week 7: Rapid Prototyping

OCT. 10th 2018--Small Scale Bogie System Task Items: -Continue developing concepts -Obtain dimensions of components  Summary: This weeks class consisted of a quick meeting which eventually lead to everyone dispersing to their respective groups. While in groups I talked with the small-scale track team to overcome an issue with the track at the three-way junction. At the junction there was a large gap the bogie would surely fall through so it was decided to stagger the turns so one is behind the other.  Additionally, I spent time reading an article consisting of all the major modules for a bogie along with the different configurations. The article can be found below. The article helped map out possible concepts that I can build up on and replicate a more feasible design.
